About Gabriele
My entire life, I loved to write and draw. Creative writing took a back seat when I pursued a career as an advocate for people with disabilities, but I squeezed a painting in when I could. I was always drawn to fragile mediums (like paint, charcoal and chalk pastels), but becoming a mother to three incredible boys made this an impractical outlet, and so I was in dire need of a way to create.
I opened my laptop and returned to writing. Looking back, I can't believe I held my breath for so long without it, because writing has become my air. It's now 4 novels later, I've learned learned when to let go of a story, I've been final 3 in a writing contest with Ulysses Press, and I've completed my first manuscript. I wasn't quite sure what I intended to do next because the thought of publishing felt so intimidating.
While I was revising the 3rd draft of Fallen Worship with no real end goal, the most incredible opportunity found me. I began editing speculative fiction novels with my best friend through our editing company, Spinning Tales Editorial, and I got to witness the bravery of my own clients as they prepared for their publishing journeys.
I am eternally grateful to my clients who let me borrow some courage from them, and to my family and friends (especially to those on Bookstagram) who continue to bolster me when I hesitate (and for goofing off with me constantly and encouraging my endless appetite for speculative fiction, while never letting me indulge in it alone). This book is for all of you!
What's inherent in every book I write:
The reader I'm always writing for is my twin sister. She is wonderfully opinionated when it comes to books (amongst other things), and we have the exact same taste. So when she tells me she's sick of something or craving something new, I listen to her. When my Booksta friends share the same sentiments, I take note, and I think of something I can deliver that will excite them all. So while my books are ever evolving to try to create fresh stories, these are components that you can bet on finding:
- First and foremost, complex plots.
- Speculative fiction.
- Distinct world building.
- Love is integral to my life--love for family, love for friends--and so I don't ever see myself writing a book without some sort of romance, but it is crucial to me as a writer that the romance is second to the plot and serves to enhance the plot rather than lead it.
- Character development and dialogue drive me as a reader, and so, it is also a major focus in my novels.
- I always have a strong theme.
